Baby's First Birthday!

This weekend our daughter had her First Birthday Party! 

 Here is what I think parents should know about First Birthdays: 

1. First birthdays are mainly for parents and not children. Your baby won't understand that everybody gathered to celebrate her birthday. 

2. Your baby won't remember how fancy and nice the party was. 

3. Ideal place for a birthday party is your house if you live in one. Your baby will feel confident and comfortable in a familiar environment.

Find a good pediatrician

Here is my criteria how to find a good pediatrician:

1. Pediatrics office has to be near your home. I am very lucky to be living in the city, because if there are any concerns regarding baby's health doctor's office is within walking distance. I do not need to worry about getting into the care, finding parking, etc.

2. I prefer a pediatrician who has kids herself.

3. Pediatrics office must have a hot 24/7 calling line.

Chlorine Free Baby Wipes by Seventh Generation

Positives: 

1. My baby is not allergic to wipes by Seventh Generation.

2. Affordable. Count of 70 costs around $3.50.

Negatives: 

1. Packaging states that wipes are unscented. Well, that's a lie. The smell is very strong and it is extremely unpleasant!

2. Does not come in re-sealable packaging. It comes in a tub, but tub won't fit into your diaper bag.

Baby Shower - Not my Cup of Tea

I think baby showers are extremely difficult to handle for an 8 months old pregnant women. Here is why: 

1. It is a stressful event to organize, unless mom-to-be is not the one who organizes it. Will she like it if she is not involved? ...
2. Mom-to-be must smile all the way through the event. Difficult.
3. Mom-to-be has to pretend that she likes all the gift. A lot of people ignore the fact that there is a baby registry and bring whatever they feel is "so cute and adorable" and sometimes not useful at all.

Perfect Baby Sweater

1. The sweater has to be long. When babies sit, crawl or move their backs get exposed, so buy a longer sweater to keep them warm and comfortable. 

2. High collar or a hoodie is a must! It will keep your baby's neck and head warm and you will be confident that she will not catch a cold. 

3. Neutral color. It has to match all the outfits. Brown, grey, ivory is a good option.

Perfect Gifts for Parents-To-Be

Here is my list of the best and most useful gifts for soon to become parents:  

1. Diapers. You can never go wrong with diapers. I would suggest getting Pampers, because they are the best, but either way, any diapers are always appreciated. Size Newborn and size 1 parents will use for the first three months. Baby goes through at least 8 diapers a day, so if you would like to give a two week diaper supply buy a pack of 100+. Do not worry, there can never be too many diapers.

Aquaphor - Healing Ointment

Positives: 

1. Aquaphor is the best healing ointment when it comes to treating dry skin! When our baby's skin was dry, I use to cover her in Aquaphor before giving her the bath, because Aquaphor will prevent water from drying her skin. I also massaged her substituting apricot oil with Aquaphor. In 2 to 4 days the dryness was gone.

Pacifiers

Bubble Bath 3-9 Months

1. A bath tub with back support, your baby must sit in a 45 degree angle. You cannot sit your baby until she sits on her own, it puts too much pressure on her back, she will be sitting once her body is ready. Baby Bottles by Tommee Tippee

Tommee Tippee are great baby bottles! Here is why I use them: 

1. The wide neck is so wide even the table spoon goes through the neck, it facilitates mixing baby cereal and other foods.

Breastfeeding - Don'ts & Limits

1. Citrus Fruits (oranges,lemons, etc) - too much citrus might upset your baby's stomach, as well as allergy possibility.

2. Tropic Fruits (mango, papaya, etc.) if you did not grew up eating exotic/tropical fruits you should limit them, baby might be allergic.

Do not swaddle.

We did not swaddle our baby, I think it slows down their development. Yes, your baby will be waking herself up because she will be bothered by the movements of her own hands, but soon she will get to know her hands and learn to control them or at least not to wake up to their touch.

2. New diaper, please! Although our daughter never complained about a dirty diaper until she was about 7 months old.
3. Cold or Hot, if your baby is sweating she is hot, if her neck is not warm she is very cold!

Stomach time - every day, few times a day!

We had our daughter on her stomach already in the hospital. It was just few moments at the beginning and few days later a minute, two or even longer. Occasionally she was not in the mood for the tummy time and that is absolutely fine. Once she discovered a new position (rather than laying on the back and staring at the ceiling) she often asked us to put her on her stomach - she needed a different view :)

My first pediatrician wasn't very good, and here is one example why I decided to find a new doctor for my baby. On our second visit she told me that I must buy Tri-Vi-Sol Vitamins Supplement Drops by Enfamil because my baby needs vitamins, especially Vitamin D.

Guys should be there!

Last weekend we had dinner with our friends, they are expecting their first baby girl in the first week of March. They are one of those couples that do not read or research much, they just "go with it", so this time they were asking few questions about labour and child care, they said it was about time to learn something because baby can be born anytime soon (they did not know that if the baby is born before 37 weeks, it is called preterm birth, and in the hospital their baby will be treated as premature).
