We never woke our baby up! Every single book on child's care will have a sleeping chart and for the first two month babies must sleep 18-20 hours a day.
We never ignored the chart, because babies grow and develop the most in their sleep. I worked around my baby's clock, if she was asleep I never work her up! Babies internal clock tells them how much and when to sleep. You can interrupt their natural schedule and they will be irritated. Let them sleep and you will never experience "crying for no reason" moments.
Some parents will disagree and say that you are the boss and you have to create their sleeping pattern from day one. It might be a good idea, but I simply believe that at this stage babies know what's best for them, and if they feel like napping for few hours and moving their feeding time, it it absolutely fine for me. At this stage they will be up every two, three hours anyways.
Please note that if your baby was born premature or if there are any concerns regarding baby's health you should consult your pediatrician regarding sleeping on demand option.
