Potty Training: What you need and do not need

things you need to potty train

What you need:

1. Baby/toddler underwear. You need about 6 pairs of panties. I got my 1-2 year underwear at H&M. Good quality, affordable price and great selection of styles and colors.
2. Potty chair. We use BabyBjorn potty chair and we love it.
3. Toilet training seat. At some point she will ask to go where you go, so you will need a training seat.
4. Laundry bar soap. When she has accidents (and that will happen, it is a part of the process) I wash her panties by hand using laundry soap bar. Unless you want to do a load of laundry just for her panties, I suggest to get a laundry soap bar.
5. Gentle baby/toddler liquid soap in an easy to use soap dispenser. Your hands will be busy: one hand to hold your baby and other does the cleaning of private parts. Find a good baby soap in a "one-hand-friendly" bottle.
6. Travel potty. We have been very lucky and our daughter asks to go when there is a toilet around, but I just ordered a travel potty to have in the stroller. Travel potty is also great for air travel or long road trips by car or train.
7. Paper towels (or microfiber cleaning cloth for green moms) and multipurpose surface cleaner. Accidents will happen, be ready to clean them up. You might want to get a carpet stain remover and fabric refresher in case there will be accidents on your sofa, bed or carpet.

No need:

1. Potty that sings and plays music. Train your baby to understand that it is a job that needs to get done, it is not a game. You go, get clean and go back to playing. Going to the bathroom just like mom and dad, not like a baby.
2. Pull ups defeat the purpose of potty training. When wearing diapers kids do not feel the "wet feeling" so it is harder for them to understand what it means to stay dry and "hold". Pull ups are easier to use when changing a toddler, but they are not a tool when it comes to potty training. Underwear is, pulls up no.

P.S. Are you a green mom? Using less diapers = greener planet! Cloth diapers users you will spend less electricity, less water and less laundry detergent. Potty train and be greener!
